About Us

Our Story

Carmel was founded by Rev. Elijah A. Butram in 1893 as a Methodist church. Rev. Buttram donated the land and timber for the first church building, cutting the timber at his own sawmill. Though very simple, this first little wooden building paved the way for what God was beginning at Carmel. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Buttram family experienced an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in a phenomenal way. Upon Rev. Buttram receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit, Carmel joined the newly founded General Council of the Assemblies of God and began its journey toward 125 years of continual ministry, as of 2018. The same Pentecost Rev. Buttram experienced that day is experienced every week at Carmel Assembly and is the force that enables us to fulfill our vision and mission. We invite you to view the video that includes many interviews, photos, and special features from life-long church members, pastors, Assemblies of God officials, and many more.

Our Goal

We exist to influence the community, invest In the Kingdom, and impact the world. Our mission is very simple: To Know Him & To Make Him Known. You will find this at the core of everything we do as a church, from ministry on the home front to our outreach around the world.

Missions & Outreach

We believe missions and outreach are the heartbeat of God and are the focus of the church. Mark 16:15 tells us the last command Christ gave before ascending to Heaven – “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”   Christ chose the Church to be his hands and feet, to reach out to a lost and hurting world around us. We strive to carry out this mission through local outreach such as Day of Hope or by sending ministry teams to nations around the world. To learn more, visit Missions & Outreach.

What We Believe

  • The scriptures are inspired by God.
  • There is only one true God, revealed in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • God’s son Jesus was both God and human.
  • Though created good, man willingly gave in to sin, inviting physical and spiritual death into the world.
  • Every person has the opportunity to have a one-on-one relationship with God through Salvation by trusting Christ, through faith and repentance, to be our personal Savior.
  • Following Salvation, we practice (1) Water Baptism, an immersion in water resembling the death of the flesh man and the new birth of the spirit man, and (2) Holy Communion, a symbolic remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death for our salvation.
  • The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a gift following Salvation that empowers believers to effectively live for Christ and be guided through their walk with the Lord.
  • The initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues.
  • Sanctification initially occurs at Salvation and is not only a declaration that a believer is holy, but also a progressive lifelong process of separating from evil and drawing closer to God, becoming more Christ-like.
  • The mission of the church is to seek and save all who are bound by sin. We believe ‘the Church’ is the Body of Christ and consists of people who have accepted the gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ.
  • The leadership of the church is ‘called’ and spiritually ordained to serve the Church. The Bible demonstrates that each of us, under leadership, must commit ourselves to reach others for Christ, to worship Him with other believers, to build up the body of believers, and to meet human need through ministries of love and compassion.
  • Divine healing of the sick is a privilege for Christians today and is provided for in Christ’s sacrifice for us.
  • Prior to His return to Earth, Jesus will rapture his church. At this future moment, all believers who have passed will rise from their graves to meet Him in the air, and Christians who are alive will be caught up with them to be with the Lord forever.
  • The Millennial Reign of Christ will begin when Jesus returns with His saints and begins His rule over earth for 1,000 years, bringing the salvation of Israel and the establishment of universal peace.
  • A final judgment will take place for those who have rejected Christ.
  • We look forward to the perfect New Heavens and a New Earth that Christ is preparing for everyone who has accepted Him. We will live with Him there forever following His millennial reign on Earth. “And so shall we forever be with the Lord!”
