Visitors FAQ
How long has Carmel been around?
Carmel has been around since 1893.  The church was founded as a Methodist church.  Around the turn of 20th century, founding pastor Rev. Elijah Buttram experienced the baptism in the Holy Spirit.  The church operated as an independent holiness church for a season.  Shortly thereafter, Carmel joined the newly formed Assemblies of God, which it has been a part of ever since.

How many people does the church minister to on a weekly basis?
Carmel ministers to approximately 500 people on a weekly basis in our services.

To what do you attribute the growth of the church over the last several years?
We attribute the growth of the church to God's Spirit.  He alone deserves the glory for what He is doing in this congregation.  The Spirit of God is given precedence in the direction of the church as well as in every service. The people that make up the church have bought in to the vision of the Great Commission.  The mission of reaching the world for Christ is our primary goal, since it is the heartbeat of God.

Where in the world is Bonifay?
Many people wonder just where the church is located.  Bonifay is a small city located off of Interstate 10 between Tallahassee and Pensacola. However, the church is not located in Bonifay.  We are in a very rural area in a community called Bethlehem about 12 miles north of the city of Bonifay.  Carmel is frequently referred to as "the cathedral in the swamp."
