Next Steps

You've just made the decision to follow Jesus. You're ready to dive into the incredible experience of walking with him daily. What are the essentials? How do you get (and stay) on track? Luke 9:23 tell us "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me." This mandates us to reject our human desires, to "crucify" ourselves every day, and follow Jesus. Living for the Lord is not always easy - God takes us through tests and situations to build our faith in Him. The result is a rock-solid foundation in Christ that will be able to stand against anything that comes our way.

1 | Prayer

Prayer is your way to communicate with your heavenly father daily. It is a way not only to make your requests known to Him, but to hear his voice speak to you personally. Prayer does not require large words or an extensive vocabulary; it is a heart-felt conversation with the one who has saved you. A great way to begin is to tell the Lord what he means to you (hallowed be your name). Matthew 6 demonstrates how we are to pray:

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

Whether you are praying for a specific need or the next step in God's plan for your life, prayer is a vital component of your daily walk with Christ that serves as your connection to heaven from earth.

2 | Bible Reading

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." - Hebrews 4:12

God did not leave us questioning how we are to live for him. He gave us the Bible - his love letter to us that serves as an instruction manual full of relevant teachings to apply in your daily journey. A great place to start for new believers is the 4 gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. We encourage you to develop a habit of reading daily. If you would like devotional material or bible reading plans, see the Welcome Desk or give us a call at 850-547-3266.

3 | Tithing

John 3:16 tells us God so loved the world that he GAVE. Giving with a joyful heart is one of the greatest lessons to learn as a Christian. It is the practice of every Bible-believing Christian to give 10% of what God has given them back to Him. For example, if you receive a weekly pay-check, 10% of that check is to be given back to the Lord in your local church. He can accomplish his plan with or without our money, but financial giving is a lesson in obedience that keeps God first in our lives and positions us under the outpour of his blessings. Malachi tells us if we do not rob Him of our tithe, he will rebuke our devourers and protect us.

4 | Learning

Education is essential in developing our spiritual man. Not only does reading the Bible contribute to spiritual development, but also the vital concepts taught by mentors and those who have walked with the Lord for many years. This is an opportunity to ask questions as well as connect with other believers who are walking a similar path as you. At Carmel, we have a variety of classes that cater to different areas of the Christian walk. From classes for College and Young Couples to Christian Family Life and addiction rehabilitation, there is somewhere for you to get plugged in. There are also classes available for children of every age. See Christian Education for a full list of classes and where they are located.

5 | Serving

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:”  1 Peter 4:10

The church flourishes when each member is actively involved. Whether you feel a calling to preach or want to assist in giving food to those in need, you are a minister. Every member of the church body has a gift placed inside of them to be used for the Lord. Whether you're good with technology, enjoy working with children, or can drive a van to bring people in the community to church, there is something for you to do to benefit the Kingdom! Check out our 2nd Sunday ministry opportunities!
